Black and White Cowhide Rugs

These come from the breed of cows known as Holstein or Friesian cattle which originated from Holland in the 17th century. They are primarily reared for their excellent dairy production and were imported into the Americas dominantly in the 19th century. Once the animals have ceased milk production they are slaughtered and various products made from their carcases including cowhide. These skins can also be bleached back to a white skin and then dyed various colours to mimic the skins of rarer more endangered species such as zebras shown above.
